I Do? Reading Guide

1. What, if anything, makes Jasmine a sympathetic heroine?

2. Considering the fact that Jasmine refuses to forgive Jacque yet seeks love and forgiveness from Nick, does that make her a hypocrite? Should we seek redemption even if it costs others personally?

3. When is "no" simply a "no," or simply an obstacle on the way to saying yes? How far would you go in the face of unrequited love?

4. In pursuing Nick, Jasmine turns the tables on traditionally defined gender roles of courtship and dating. How far is too far for a woman to pursue a man? Are you okay with the level and commitment of Jasmine's persistence?

5. Put yourself in Nick's position. With Jasmine's relentless chasing after you, would you have allowed it to go unabated, or do you call the police and get a restraining order for stalking?

6. Nadine is very outspoken about her desire for Jasmine to be with Jacque. Charlotte is especially vocal about her support of Jasmine's quest for Nick. Yet Jasmine never mentions to Nadine that her fiancé, Rodney, her ex, still pines for her, and is basically marrying Nadine as a consolation prize. To what degree are we responsible for telling our friends the unadulterated truth about their romantic relationships? Were you in Jasmine's shoes, would you have said something to Nadine?

7. Parenting becomes a theme in I Do? Nick neglects his estranged father while Jasmine reaches out to her in a time of despair. Evaluate your own relationship with your parents. Does it mirror that of the characters' in the book?

8. Was Tabitha right in hiding her somewhat shady past from her fiancé? With the speed of their courtship and engagement, should she give her future husband full disclosure? How much do you tell your spouse or significant other?

9. In going after Nick, Jasmine puts her career in a precarious position. How much would you allow/have you allowed a relationship or love interest affect your job?

10. In the face of such staunch opposition, do you believe in yourself and push on or do you listen to reason and give up?
